God Bless America

God Bless America

I found this post card of “God Bless America” on top of a urinal the other day. It caught my attention because it seemed like an odd place to find this powerful symbol of American patriotism. Afterwards, I got curious about the origin of the anthem “God Bless America”. It was written by Irving Berlin in 1918 while serving the US army in New York. The words ” Stand beside her, and guide her, thru the night with a light from above” seem more appropriate than ever in these times of great tensions and conflicts.

“God Bless America,
Land that I love.
Stand beside her, and guide her
Thru the night with a light from above.
From the mountains, to the prairies,
To the oceans, white with foam
God bless America, My home sweet home.”
