My background
I am the boy with blond hairI was a child of the 1970’s. Every summer I went with my family to hippie camps, which were a lot of fun. The hippie movement also inspired my parents to change their conventional hog farm into an organic production commune where we would share work, house and food with another family. This also marked the end of the hippie era. It did not last long before the other family moved out and we were now in the 1980’s. We had all learned that ideologies sometimes conflict with human nature. But my parents  farm, ‘Bigaard Økologisk Gartneri ’, stayed organic. My parents were truly pioneers because at that time the general knowledge on good organic farming practices was sparse.

I finished high school in 1990 and I was utterly confused about what to do my life. I followed several detours from pursuing a career as a professional bicycling athlete to spending a year in the desert in New Mexico learning about Permaculture and alternative living. It was all very interesting but not really what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. In 1996 I made up my mind that I wanted to become a biologist. The first few years of my university studies were a steep learning curve for me because I had forgotten most of my academic training from high school. But what I lacked in formal training at the time was made up by my passion  and curiosity about the natural world. To this day my curiosity is still my primary driver for doing research. And the hope that my humble contribution will make a difference.
